The Royal Command: Your Invitation to Life in Full!

“If you really fulfill the royal law stated in Scripture, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself,’ you are doing well.” ~James 2:8

Imagine you’ve been given a secret key, a master blueprint, that unlocks true flourishing, not just for you, but for everyone around you. Sounds incredible, right? Well, that key exists, and it’s not some complex mystery. Jesus, in His infinite wisdom and love, distilled the entirety of God’s law into two simple, yet profound, commands that act as the governing principles of His Kingdom:

“Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.” (Matthew 22:37)
“Love your neighbor as yourself.” (Matthew 22:39)

He didn’t just say these were important – He declared them the first and greatest commandments, the ones upon which everything else hangs. This isn’t just a suggestion– it’s the Royal Command, the supreme law of God’s Kingdom. It’s “royal” because it reflects the very character of our King, Jesus Christ, and it governs every aspect of life under His benevolent rule.

Now, when we talk about this Royal Command, we often hear a lot about the second part – “Love your neighbor as yourself.” And for good reason! It’s the part that spills out into tangible actions, shaping our interactions and our communities. But let’s not forget the foundational truth – the first commandment, to love God with everything we are, is the very wellspring from which our ability to love our neighbor flows. Think of it like the Physics of God – His love for us is the initial force, the foundational energy, that empowers us to love Him back and, consequently, to love others. It’s not a human-generated effort – it’s a divine outflow.

Why does this matter so much? Because God’s design for us is always about life – abundant, flourishing, deeply satisfying life. When we genuinely love God, our hearts are aligned with His truth, our minds are focused on His purposes, and our souls find their rest in Him. This deep, abiding love for God naturally transforms us from the inside out. It recalibrates our internal compass, shifting our priorities, and infusing us with His own perfect love.

And this is where the deep magic happens (Narnia reference) for loving our neighbor. When our hearts are overflowing with God’s love, it becomes natural– not forced, but natural– to extend that love outwards. It’s no longer a heavy obligation, but a joyful expression of the life we’ve received. We start to see others through God’s eyes, recognizing their inherent worth and dignity, just as He sees us.

Now, let’s be honest, fulfilling this Royal Command isn’t always easy. We’re human, and we’re prone to temptation – and based on our actual personality, we’re prone to specific temptations. One of the most insidious is the tendency to favor certain groups over others. It’s so easy to fall into the trap of thinking some people are “better” or more deserving of our attention or respect simply because they have more money, a higher social status, or seem more like us (similar personality).

This was a struggle even in the early church, as the Apostle James points out in his letter. He spoke strongly against showing preferential treatment to the wealthy – and some were even showing preferential treatment to those wealthy individuals who might have been persecuting the church! It’s a stark reminder that our profession of faith can be called into question when our actions don’t align with God’s heart. James calls this violating the “royal law.” He reminds us that this law – to love our neighbor as ourselves – is the fulfillment of all the other laws, the very essence of God’s will.

This isn’t about earning our salvation, mind you. Our obedience doesn’t save us – it evidences our salvation. It’s a beautiful, natural outpouring of a heart transformed by God’s grace. When we genuinely love God, we desire to live in a way that honors Him, and that includes treating every person with the same love and respect that God shows us. It means looking past superficialities and recognizing the image of God in everyone, regardless of their circumstances.

So, how do we embrace the Royal Command fully, right here, right now?

Start with God – reignite your love for God. Spend time in His presence daily – even several times daily. Read His Word. Reflect on His incredible love for you, demonstrated most powerfully through Jesus Christ. When your heart is filled with His love, it naturally overflows.

See others as God sees them. Challenge any tendency to categorize or judge. Ask God to help you see people through His eyes. Recognize the inherent dignity and worth in every individual you encounter, whether they’re a close friend, a colleague, a stranger, or someone you find challenging – and even your enemies!

Act with love, not partiality. Look for (action!) opportunities to express that love tangibly. Is there someone being overlooked? Someone who needs a word of encouragement? Someone you might have unconsciously favored others over? Make a conscious choice to extend grace and kindness without reservation. It’s in these acts of selfless love that the Royal Command truly shines.

Embrace the liberty. James also calls this the “law of liberty.” Why? Because when we live by love, we are freed from the burdens of legalism, judgment, and division. We are set free to experience genuine connection and to live in the blessing that comes from alignment with God’s perfect will.

The Royal Command isn’t a burden! it’s a liberation. It’s an invitation to experience life as God intended– a life rich in love for Him and overflowing with genuine care for all His creation. Today is the perfect day to embrace this Royal Command, to seek its fulfillment in your life, and to enjoy the incredible freedom and joy that comes from living under the perfect reign of our loving King. Let’s choose love, today and every day!

Much love and blessings. Walk with the King today!
