Level 2 — Permission Leadership

Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due, when it is in your power to do it.
Proverbs 3:27

Now the fun begins. Or the Real Leadership… This is where we begin to earn our leadership wings, understand our people, and know their needs, desires, and true capabilities. Now we learn and put into place actionable methodologies and procedures to intentionally move up in leadership. You can be leading but if no one is following, you’re not really a leader. If you’re attitude is my way or the highway, you’ve got stinkin thinkin.

To grow in leadership, you must get others to give you permission to lead them. WHAT you say? Otherwise, they will not follow — maybe a little, but you don’t get their heart and full cooperation (unless they are a better leader than you are!). Leading means you are moving people to action and making work more enjoyable for everyone. How? Change your attitude from me to we. You need a paradigm shift in the team to go from have to, to want to.

What’s the secret sauce? You have to like people and desire to help them. For some personalities, that’s hard to do. Jesus washed the disciples feet — and he was their leader. You need to do the same (not literally).

The paradigm shift requires you to move from top down leadership to side-by-side. Learn to listen and ask questions instead of talking. The atmosphere is more informal. You have to get people to buy-in to your ideas — not merely obey (the kindness of God leads us to change — not his wrath, Romans 2:4). You must learn to value individuals. Respect all (January 28). Can’t respect someone? Lead/teach them how to became a person others can respect. Show humility (January 20). I love what Melvin Maxwell said, most people feel undervalued, insecure, and lost. It’s your job to change that. Team means we work together to be the best. Learn to be Authentic (January 27) — when you don’t know, say so — and then say that you will know within 24 hours (bring hope!). Then go find out.

Your job is to bring out the best in people — start by valuing them!

Pray: Lord, show me the value of the people you have created that I may value them, love them, lead them, and grow them to their peak!
