Lead By Example

Shepherd the flock of God that is among you, exercising oversight, not under compulsion, but willingly, as God would have you; not for shameful gain, but eagerly; not domineering over those in your charge, but being examples to the flock. 1 Peter 5:2

As leaders, people are watching us for input on how to lead, how to accomplish. What is our leadership style. We should lead with humility and resolve. Not because we are a leader, but because it’s the right thing to do.  We must be willing to lead and happy (eager) to lead — or we’ll get burned out and begin to fail, taking our people down. Don’t be domineering (watch out Dominant (D) personalities!) but working diligently to do the next right thing. Having the right attitude and skill to grow the team into success.

How? In speech, words that edify. Even if they are hard words. No gossip (None. Zero. Zilch. Nada. Never). Death and life are in your words — be careful how you use them (Proverbs 18:21). In conduct, act appropriately toward all. Be righteous. Do the right thing and the next right thing. Live the Fruit of the Spirit — love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Work hard. Show respect. Do all the things in this book(!). Act how you want your people to act.

Be faithful to work in such a way as to grow your team, yourself, and the organization. Be faithful to your leaders. Treat your leaders how you want your team to treat you. Do what you say your going to do. Keep commitments. Reflect often (daily, weekly, and monthly…) so you know what needs to change in your own behavior and in your team. Correctly challenge leadership (lead up) if they are failing to lead correctly (more on this in a coming devotion).

Be pure in your actions. Have accountability partners and mentors to help you keep away from doing illegal, immoral, and unethical actions. In fact, write out in your journal the things you can do that are in these categories and reflect on it from time to time. Things like stealing, wasting time, gossiping, inappropriate behavior, anger, sexual misconduct. You can’t expect your people to be pure if you are not. Your example in all things will be evident. All eyes are on you. More is caught than taught.

Pray: Lord, help me be the person I want my people to be and show that in everything I do. Help me reflect and do the right things day to day.
